As of November 2, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved the first generic version of Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) in the United States, with an estimated 5 million U. adults taking it each month. The generic drug was developed by AstraZeneca, Inc. in 2003, and was approved by the FDA in June 2009.

Nexium is the generic version of the heartburn medication Nexium, which was originally developed by AstraZeneca and marketed as Prilosec, which is available as an oral tablet. The name may be confusing, but many people think it means “heartburn medication,” but in reality, it means “heartburn treatment,” “heartburn pills,” “nexium tablet.” Nexium can cause heartburn to occur for several reasons, including heartburn that is reflux disease-related and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (such as ulcers, holes in the stomach lining and heartburn) or GERD-related. GERD is when acid reflux occurs in the stomach lining (the lining of the throat and stomach) that can lead to difficulty swallowing and erode the esophagus (the tube leading from the stomach to the throat). GERD is more common in people who have a history of heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, or other conditions that can cause acid reflux. Nexium is also used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged esophagus (GERD-associated heartburn). The condition is caused by stomach acid being filled with acid, which is then eliminated by the esophagus, which is usually located just behind the mouth and stomach. By causing the acid in the stomach to move up into the esophagus, Nexium helps to eliminate the acid in the stomach and reduce the amount of acid in the esophagus. The drug is used to treat the symptoms of GERD-associated heartburn.

Nexium has been on the market since 2004, and sales of the generic drug reached an all-time high of $2.5 billion in 2008. AstraZeneca has been on the market for over 20 years, and AstraZeneca’s U. patent on Nexium expired in 2010. AstraZeneca now markets and sells its generic versions of Nexium, which is not an approved generic drug for treating heartburn.

The first generic Nexium, esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium), was developed by AstraZeneca and marketed as Prilosec in 2003. Prilosec is available as an oral tablet and as a gastroesophageal reflux medication. Prilosec is available as an over-the-counter medication. Prilosec is also available in capsule form. AstraZeneca has conducted many clinical trials to date, including the company’s Nexium trial in 2023, which showed that Prilosec significantly reduced the symptoms of heartburn, which is a frequent complaint among people taking heartburn medications. The trial showed that Prilosec reduced the severity and frequency of heartburn by 14.8 percent and 24.5 percent, respectively, when compared with the placebo group. The trial showed that Prilosec reduced the frequency of heartburn by 27.7 percent, and the severity of heartburn by 8.4 percent.

In 2007, AstraZeneca launched the first generic version of Nexium, esomeprazole magnesium (Nexium), as AstraZeneca marketed and sold its Prilosec and Nexium brands in the United States. The U. patent on Nexium expired in April 2010, and it was immediately in flux because of reports of severe gastrointestinal side effects (such as gas, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain) associated with the drug.

What is Nexium (Esomeprazole)?

Nexium, known generically as esomeprazole, is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). This group of medicines works by suppressing the production of acid and other fluids needed for normal digestion and well-being. Nexium is sometimes prescribed for patients with heartburn or acid reflux disease (heartburn caused by an overactive or underactive protonATIVEP).

Nexium is sometimes prescribed to treat heartburn in adults, but in the past 20 years, doctors have discovered that Nexium can cause an additional side effect, called gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). GERD is a condition where the stomach is unable to absorb the contents of food or liquids normally consumed. The symptoms of GERD can include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that reduce stomach acid production
  • Increased sensitivity to stomach acid
  • Pain or irritation at the site of a stomach ulcer
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Frequent heartburn
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Difficulty absorbing food
  • Difficulty sleeping with light meals
  • Frequent stomach bleeding

Symptoms of GERD can include:

  • Swollen esophagus
  • Abnormal esophageal acid production
  • Increased pressure in the esophagus
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Paresthesia and weakness in the hands and feet

It is important to follow your doctor’s advice about whether Nexium is safe for you to take.
